Ed Seykota: Top Market Wizard and Trend Following Trader

Wisdom from Ed Seykota: The aha! process lies at the heart of price change. For instance, consider the series: OTTFFSSE. What is the next letter? This puzzle creates tension–until you see the first letters of the ordinal numbers–one, two. Aha! you say. A lot happens during an aha. The puzzle dies and the tension dissipates. A societal aha! drives price. Read the newspapers and the news magazines during a major move. At first, no one gets why the move is happening. There’s a lot of confusion. Part of the move’s way up, some people get it. At the end, everybody gets it. The tension is resolved and the move ends.

From Futures Magazine : Mr. Seykota himself has put together a money management track record with returns of roughly +60% net of fees over the three-decade span of his trading career…

TurtleTrader is especially grateful for Ed’s guidance and influence . You can read much more about Ed in the book Trend Following . Trading as a trend follower, Ed Seykota turned ,000 into ,000,000 over a 12 year time period in his model account–an actual client account. Ed was self-taught, but influenced early on in his career by Richard Donchian’s writings. He has served as a teacher and mentor to some great traders including Michael Marcus , David Druz and Jim Hamer .

What makes Ed especially unique is his continual self-examination and commitment to studying the psychological components of trading while also helping other traders achieve their potential.

In the early 1970s, Seykota was hired as an analyst by a major brokerage firm. He conceived and developed the first commercial computerized trading system for managing clients’ money in the futures markets. An excerpt from and interview of Ed Seykota in Market Wizards by Jack Schwager: Q. How did you first get involved in trading? A. In the late 1960s, I decided that silver had to rise when the U.S. Treasury stopped selling it. I opened a commodity margin account to take full advantage of my insight. While I was waiting, my broker convinced me to short some copper. I soon got stopped out and lost some money and my trading virginity. So I went back to waiting for the start of the big, inevitable bull market in silver. Finally, the day arrived. I bought. Much to my amazement and financial detriment, the price started falling! At first it seemed impossible to me that silver could fall on such a bullish deal. Yet the price was falling and that was a fact. Soon my stop got hit. This was a very stunning education about the way markets discount news. I became more and more fascinated with how markets work. About that time, I saw a letter published by Richard Donchian , which implied that a purely mechanical trend following system could beat the markets. This too seemed impossible to me. So I wrote computer programs (on punch cards in those days) to test the theories. Amazingly, his [Donchian] theories tested true. To this day, I’m not sure I understand why or whether I really need to. Anyhow, studying the markets, and backing up my opinions with money, was so fascinating compared to my other career opportunities at the time, that I began trading full time for a living.

EP13 // Steve From No Brainer Trades And The Only Thing You Need To Remember When Trading

Last Updated: March 21, 2018 by Hugh Kimura

Hello traders, I'm very happy to be back with another episode of The Trading Lifestyle Podcast and I was fortunate to be able to interview Steve W. from No Brainer Trades. If you have been trading Forex for awhile, you have probably heard of Steve because his blog provides traders with a ton of quality free information.

Like several of the other people that I have interviewed before, Steve didn't originally set out to become a trader. He basically just needed a job and found one as a clerk at an investment bank in New York. This happened while Steve was still in college and he was actually studying for a degree in business for film and TV.

Being a clerk sparked his interest however and he started learning everything he could about trading. This lead to him becoming an analyst and the rest is history.

He has been trading professionally for about 7 years and has a very no-nonsense approach to trading. He primarily trades price action and in the interview, he talks about the key factors that new traders really need to understand in order to become successful.

I hope you find this interview very useful. It is almost an hour long and packed with some great insights into how Steve approaches trading and what he has learned over the years.

So make yourself comfortable, get out your notebook and pour your favorite drink. Enjoy!

  • #6. How to ‘never’ lose

I learned this while working at Bridgewater Associates (they manage about 0 billion) from a funny looking Irishman.

Back in 2011/2012 I forgot this rule and I duly got slaughtered.

There is a story inside of the book ‘Marketing Wizzards’. It talks about a great trader who locks himself in a room with no distractions. No windows. No TV. No Computer.

He has his assistant bring him his chart-book without the instruments named.

So he doesn’t know if he’s trading pork bellies or gold. He doesn’t care.

All he cares about is the price and the fact that he has no distractions. It means he ‘never loses’.

My rule gives me the same sort of piece of mind.

Before I let you in on it you must know what I mean by ‘never’ lose.

When you lose a trade – you aren’t ‘losing’ . It is simply part of the process. It is the equivalent of a business expense.

You will always lose trades. However, when you lose your mind and you don’t follow your own rules. That’s when you truly lose.

So here are the exact rules you need to follow to NEVER lose, always stick to your rules, and always win in the long run.

Do not share your trading results

I did once. And only once.

    It was a huge mistake.

All of the sudden I was answerable to thousands of people who happen to stumble across my profile. This doesn’t work when you are a trader.

I lost focus. I kept fussing about whether a trade was a winner or a loser. I didn’t focus on whether it followed the rules or not.

As long as you follow the rules… you are winning.

When you don’t follow the rules – you are losing (even when you make a profit).

Systems and routines are the only thing that make you profitable in the long run.

It is the only thing that’ll protect you against the sharks.

So whatever you do – don’t share you trading results. Not even with your husband or wife.

It’ll put external pressures on you.

Don’t even mention a winning trade or a losing trade. Simply tell them you’re winning because you followed the rules.

How You Could Have Made 9.5x Your Money On This Stock

As you’re aware, this week’s major American holiday on July 4 will have a profound affect on the markets. Trading volume will be reduced so trade accordingly. And Happy Independence…

Edward Arthur Seykota (born August 7, 1946) is a commoditiestrader, who earned S.B. degrees in Electrical Engineering from MIT[1] and Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management, both in 1969. In 1970 he pioneered Systems trading by using early punched card computers to test ideas on trading the markets. Seykota resided in Incline Village, Nevada, on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, but recently moved to Texas.

    Career[edit]

As a young man he attended high school near The Hague, Netherlands and also lived in Voorburg.

    Trading methods[edit]

Seykota is a trader who in 1970 pioneered a computerized trading system (now known as Trading System) for the futures market for the brokerage house he and Michael Marcus were working for. Later, he decided to venture out on his own and manage a few of his client's accounts.

Much of Seykota's success was attributed to his development and utilization of computerized trading systems to which he first tested on a mainframe IBM computer. Later on, the brokerage house he had been working for adopted his system for their trades.

His interest in creating a computerized system was spawned after he read a letter by Richard Donchian on utilizing mechanical trend following systems for trading and also Donchian's 5- and 20-day moving average system. He was also inspired by the book Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefèvre. His first trading system was developed based on exponential moving averages.

    Trading
Systems don’t need to be changed. The trick is for a trader to develop a system with which he is compatible.

Seykota improved this system over time, adapting the system to fit his trading style and preferences. With the initial version of the system being rigid, he later introduced more rules into the system in addition to pattern triggers and money management algorithms.

Another aspect of his success was his genuine love for trading and his optimistic demeanour. This factor sustained his efforts to continuously improve on his system although he never changed the response indicators of the system and instead fine tuned market stimuli.

    The Trading Tribe[edit]

In 1992, Seykota gathered together a group of traders to discuss their emotions, due to his concern that traders often allow their emotions to overrule their logic. They start gathering regularly and Seykota develops methods to support personal growth.[2] Over the years it expands to include Tribes all over the world and people in many professions. Members help to develop a common set of practices Seykota calls TTP, the Trading Tribe Process.[3] He describes these ideas and practices in his book The Trading Tribe (2005) and its refinement in an online article called TTP Extenstions: Replacing the Zero-Point Process with the Rocks Process (2013).[4]

    Influence[edit]

In Market Wizards, Updated: Interviews With Top Traders, author Jack D. Schwager devotes a chapter to Ed and writes that his 'achievements must certainly rank him as one of the best traders of our time.'[5] Some of Ed's students have included Michael Marcus, David Druz, Dean Giordano, Patrick Dougherty,Easan Katir,[6] and Jason Russell of Acorn Global Investments[7]

Trader, instructor, and blogger Michael Martin is known to be one of Ed's protégés as well.[8]
